10 Simple Habits That Will Change Your Life - Personal Growth

Are you looking for some simple ways to make a huge impact on your life? What better place to begin than with the simple things we do daily… our habits. According to the great Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” If we want to achieve success, happiness or finally reach our goals… we can simply start with our habits.

Habits are powerful!

Our habits shape our lives. In fact, they are essential to create lasting change. Once a decision to do something becomes a habit, the road toward success becomes effortless. I read this amazing book, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and it completely changed my perspective. I encourage you to check it out to learn a little more about the psychology behind our habits. It's pretty amazing and the best part is that it works!

Our habits can affect us in so many more ways than I ever imagined. So, it's very important that we are developing habits of success vs. habits that lead to failure. I've included a list of 10 Simple Habits that helped to improve my life below. My hope is that these will give you some ideas of ways to implement change in your own life.

 

HERE ARE 10 SIMPLE HABITS THAT WILL IMPROVE YOUR LIFE!

 

1. WAKE UP EARLY... shout out to my early birds!

When I worked in corporate America, I found myself consistently having a bad day as a result of a hectic morning. Between getting myself and the kids ready and fighting the morning traffic, I barely had time to eat breakfast! I was usually forgetting something or rushing to arrive to work on-time. I knew I had to make a change. So, I decided to try waking up at 5am every morning instead of 6am.

That simple one hour shift has completely changed my day. I have plenty of time in the morning. I'm not rushing to get ready or skipping out on breakfast. I'm not in a frantic mood as a result of a hectic morning. In fact, I even have time to meditate for about 10-15 min before I start my day. One thing I will say is that it did take me about a week or so to fully adjust to this change. But, once my decision to wake up at 5am became a habit I do it without question... it's almost as if my body has created an internal alarm clock!

 

2. MEDITATE

Are you feeling overwhelmed... what about anxious or depressed? I remember constantly stressing over situations at work or worrying about my finances. I would get so caught up in all of my responsibilities and problems that I was a nervous wreck. Luckily, I was introduced to a simple remedy that has helped me overcome my mental despair. Meditation!

Since I’ve learned the benefits of meditation and developed a habit of meditating, my mental health has improved. I started by simply following guided meditations I found on YouTube. I would do this a few times per week. Once I began to notice how good I felt overall, I started meditating everyday. Essentially, meditation helps clear all of the clutter we hold in mentally. This allows us to effectively find solutions without stress and unnecessary worry.

3. RUNNING... or walking :)  

Want to feed two birds with one seed? Try running my friend! I highly recommend developing a habit of running or adding some form of physical exercise to your routine. Not only will you improve your physical health over time, but you will feel better mentally almost instantly. Think about it... don't you ♥ the way you feel after a good run! Your mind is clear, your stress levels are low and your endorphins are high.

When I decided to develop this habit, I would simply walk around my neighborhood. Eventually, I started to alternate between walking and running. Now I have built up and endurance and a consistent habit of running. So, it you're not into running I completely understand. I just hope that you at least give it a try.

 

4. DRINK WATER

Drinking water is super important guys! I know we’ve all heard that we should drink 8 glasses of water per day and all of that… but this is so true. I was never much of a water drinker, but since I’ve experienced its power I’m hooked! Drinking water has a ton of great health benefits, which you can google and research until you’re convinced. But, for me drinking water cleared my skin, helped grow my hair and helped me clear my sinuses. How awesome is that?

 

5. EAT HEALTHIER

Eating healthy is another great daily habit because it improves your overall health and well-being. Think about it, food is like the fuel for your body. Your body is extremely important, valuable and ultimately priceless. So, if you had a super expensive car would you put low-grade or cheap gas in it? Technically, you could because your car would still run… but over time you will start to develop problems with your automobile. This is how we should view our bodies. They are valuable, we shouldn’t fuel them with junk.

 

6. AFFIRMATIONS

What we choose to believe about ourselves and our lives is a direct reflection of our thoughts. So, you can believe you are a success or you can believe you are a failure… either way, you are right. You have the power to choose and I cannot emphasize this enough. Your thoughts create your reality! So, if you have all of this power why would you choose to feed yourself negativity? Why not replace the negative thoughts that race through your mind with positive affirmations?

Instead of I’m hopeless and my life is horrible, try… I’m improving myself and my life is headed in a positive direction. It all starts with you and your perspective. So the moment you notice negative thoughts make the conscious decision to replace them with something positive. Break the old pattern and create a new reality for yourself.

 

7. CONNECT WITH NATURE

I absolutely ♥ spending time outside. Whether I’m taking a walk around my neighborhood, watching my kiddos ride their bikes or simply sitting on a park bench taking in the serenity of this world… I feel peaceful. Maybe its because I’m a Virgo sun and the earth energy makes me crave the outdoors. Or maybe its because the fresh oxygen helps me clear my mind and see things from a positive perspective. Either way, I make the conscious decision to connect with nature each day. I turn off the computer, put my phone on vibrate and enjoy the beauty that is this world. You should try it for yourself and let me know how it made you feel.

 

8. READ

Reading can be an amazing stress reliever if you are open to the idea and willing to receive its beauty. I view reading as a way to feed two birds with one seed. When I need to relax or I need to replace my negative thinking with something positive, I will pick up a book. But, not just any book… something positive that will nourish my mind at the same time. Currently, I am reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho which is an inspirational story about a man’s experience creating his life.

This book inspires me to continue on my path toward happiness and success. I encourage you to find some uplifting and inspirational books and commit some time each day toward reading their positive content. When I first began to incorporate reading into my routine, I would read only a few times per week. Now that I’ve found a genre that interests me, I read everyday… faithfully 🙂  Try it for yourself!

 

9. THOUGHT-STOPPING

You have no idea how many times I thought about giving up on Seed Water Sun. When I first began to create the site, I had no idea what I was doing… I just wanted to write, create and help people improve their lives. I did not expect the amount of dedication it would take to learn my craft and develop a website from scratch while maintaining a high level of empathy, professionalism and integrity. I’ve spent countless hours planning and developing and I’ve sacrificed so much to breathe life into Seed Water Sun.

I was tired and mentally exhausted, but I was determined to reach my goal. So, when I began to think I could not finish this major project, I would immediately stop my thoughts. I would replace “There’s no way I can be successful at this” with “I am learning and growing and I can absolutely do this.” This practice helped me get through the “dip” and continue on my path.

 

10. LET IT GO

I saved this one for last because it is my favorite 🙂 We are all working on improving ourselves and may subconsciously expect others to be doing the same. But that is not always the case. We are all different and experiencing this lifetime in unique ways. People are going to be who they are and that is perfectly fine.

What we need to remember is that the actions of others are not our burden to carry. We have to let it go. So, when Christy from the office starts gossiping about you again, let it go. When that low-energy driver cuts you off on the highway, let it go.  We have enough to deal with in life to be focused on petty or insignificant energy lowering situations. Sometimes, we just have to let it go…

 

SO, LET’S TAKE SOME ACTION
